On January 27, 2025, Open Society Foundations-Western Balkans (OSF-WB) in Skopje hosted two key meetings as part of the initiative to boost Western Balkans Green Transition Agenda through UNFCCC and help the national delegation to improve negotiation capacities. The discussions brought together government representatives, civil society organizations (CSOs), and academia to strengthen national climate action and engagement in global climate processes.

The National Stakeholders Meeting gathered representatives from the Prime Minister’s Office; Ministry of Environment; Ministry of Energy, Mining and Mineral resources and the Protection and Rescue Directorate, focusing on institutional coordination, COP30 priorities, and financial mechanisms for accelerating climate efforts. They highlighted the country’s achievements in past COP engagements, the progress on climate adaptation, and the financial mechanisms available to accelerate the transition. Participants highlighted challenges and needs, focusing on capacity building, better interconnection between institutions and more effective implementation.

In the second session, over 20 representatives from CSOs and academia gathered to explore strategic engagement in UNFCCC processes. The agenda featured insights into the negotiation structures of COP29, the role of civil society in climate governance, and opportunities to bridge the gap between policy and action. This meeting served as a platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration, ensuring that CSOs and academia play a proactive role in shaping North Macedonia’s climate policy. Participants agreed on the need for stronger policy advocacy, technical support mechanisms, and better alignment between scientific research and policymaking. They highlighted the need for collaboration between government, academia and CSOs.

These discussions mark a significant step in aligning national policies with international climate goals. The OSF-WB remains committed to fostering inclusive climate action for a sustainable and just green transition in the Western Balkans.
