Converge2eu – Monitoring and Supporting Western Balkan Convergence With the European Union

EU Integration and Regional Cooperation

Date 14 December 2024

converge2eu is an initiative designed to accelerate the Western Balkans’ economic, social and institutional convergence with the EU. Supported by the Open Society Foundation – Western Balkans, the project is coordinated by the Vienna Institute for International Economic Studies (Austria), Think Europe (Slovenia), and implemented together with partners from the six Western Balkan countries: Dritan Shano (Albania), Centre for Policy and Governance (Bosnia and Herzegovina), Riinvest Institute (Kosovo), Institut Alternativa (Montenegro), Association for Research and Analysis (ZMAI) (North Macedonia) and Institute for Development and Innovation (Serbia).

ABOUT THE PROJECT
converge2eu creates tools and knowledge to advance the Western Balkans’ EU convergence journey. The project offers robust monitoring and insights by developing a comprehensive convergence database and index, supported by an interactive dashboard and annual reports. The initiative will also deliver scenario analyses, and tailored policy recommendations, while driving active promotion campaigns to help advance and enhance EU-related reforms and integration efforts.

LOCAL IMPACT
At the national level, the project helps governments identify specific reform priorities for economic, social, and institutional improvements. Tailored national policy reports, accompanied by advocacy campaigns, engage policymakers and stakeholders to facilitate meaningful change. Each Western Balkan country will receive tailored recommendations in annual national policy reports, supported by targeted advocacy to engage policymakers and stakeholders. By fostering national dialogues, the project aims to strengthen governance, reduce socio-economic disparities, and enhance public trust in EU integration.

REGIONAL IMPACT
With a focus on regional collaboration, converge2eu brings the Western Balkans together to address shared challenges and coordinate efforts toward EU convergence. It will also demonstrate to the world that the region can work together, produce high-quality outcomes, and identify what needs to be done to converge to EU standards of living and accelerate the EU accession process.
