The Green Mayors Forum is an initiative supporting municipal leadership in energy transition and climate action across the Western Balkans. Building on the success of the Sunny Schools Initiative—which installed rooftop solar PV systems in 86 schools across 35 municipalities—it brings together mayors, school communities, civil society, and technical experts to strengthen the role of small and medium-sized municipalities in the green transformation. The Forum leverages opportunities created by the EU Green Deal, the Western Balkans Growth Plan, and growing climate resilience investments to shift from isolated projects toward structured regional cooperation, culminating in the establishment of the Western Balkans Green Mayor Alliance.

The initiative aims to celebrate achievements and lessons learned, foster peer learning and strategic dialogue, align local actions with EU climate and energy goals, and enhance municipal leadership capacity and visibility. Key activities include organizing a high-level regional forum with 120 participants, developing outreach materials, and engaging national stakeholders and partners. Expected results include the signing of a joint declaration to launch the Green Mayor Alliance, strengthened regional cooperation, improved local capacity for renewable energy deployment and inclusive governance, and increased support for citizen-led climate solutions.
