This paper examines the evolving EU enlargement policy, particularly the shift toward gradual integration of candidate countries prior to full membership. It focuses on the underexplored potential of EU comitology – committees led by the European Commission, as a mechanism for early institutional engagement. Through an analysis of active committees since 2022 and interviews with stakeholders, the paper assesses the participation of the Western Balkans 6 (WB6) in comitology. Findings reveal limited involvement, highlighting missed opportunities for deeper integration and capacity-building. The paper argues that enhancing WB6 participation in these committees could significantly strengthen their preparedness for EU accession.
