Every five years, the European Union makes radical changes to its leadership structures of key institutions. This period also represents the opportunity to set the medium-term agenda and the direction the European Union will take in the coming years. Everything starts with the elections for the European Parliament, followed by the election of the heads of key institutions, the European Commission vote, the establishment of parliamentary committees and the transition to the three main EU institutions – the European Commission, the Council and the Parliament. The year 2019 was considered to be the most important so far in the history of the European Union, and so were the European elections in 28 member states, which were held during May 23-26. The election results suggested a significant shift in the balance of political forces in the new Parliament, which was also reflected in the distribution of key posts in other institutions such as the European Council, the European Commission and the European Central Bank.
