The Open Society Foundation Western Balkans (OSF WB) continued “Sunny Schools” initiative in the Municipality of Bitola. The initiative in Bitola was implemented in collaboration with the Municipality, schools and other local stakeholders and equipped six schools in the city and rural areas with photovoltaic systems, enabling them to reduce energy costs and contribute to environmental sustainability.

This project is part of a larger regional effort by OSF WB, spanning five Balkan countries over the last three years. In total, the initiative has reached 84 schools across 30 municipalities in the Western Balkans. The installation of solar energy systems is expected to generate significant savings for schools and municipalities alike, with funds redirected toward further educational improvements. In Bitola alone, the estimated annual savings amount to €15,000.

The energy produced will not only reduce costs but also increase awareness about the value of renewable energy in education. The funds saved will return to the schools through additional projects, making this initiative sustainable in every sense.

This initiative reflects the Open Society Foundation Western Balkans’ commitment to advancing the just green transition, fostering renewable energy adoption, and empowering communities across the region.
