In Bosnia and Herzegovina, in the city of Živinice, an official ceremony was held on the central square to mark June 19th – City Day. Along with a diverse program, the ceremony included a formal Academy and an awards ceremony recognizing outstanding citizens, collectives, and non-governmental organizations that have contributed to the promotion and prosperity of the city. This year’s recipient of the City of Živinice Memorial Plaque is the Open Society Foundations Western Balkans. The local community, through the City Council and on the recommendation of the Mayor of Živinice, recognized the significance of our Sunny Schools project, which included, among other things, the installation of a photovoltaic power plant at the “Second Primary School.” This plant fully meets the school’s electricity needs. The photovoltaic power plant leads to savings in funds previously used to cover electricity bills, which are now used to improve the working conditions of the school and its students. We are pleased that the local community and the city administration of Živinice, located in the heart of the coal region in the Western Balkans, have recognized the importance of the green transition and renewable energy sources. The Memorial Plaque was awarded to Mr. Mervan Mirascija from the Sarajevo office of Open Society Foundations Western Balkans.
